FAQ
What is a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT)? Is it a surgical procedure?
A Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) or a Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant is a medical procedure that involves replacement of diseased or damaged bone marrow with healthy stem cells. It does not involve any surgery. The stem cells are injected into the body by an IV, like a blood transfusion.
BMT is used to treat which diseases?
BMT is utilized in the treatment of several blood disorders and cancers like Leukemia, Lymphoma and Multiple Myeloma. It is also useful in such ailments as Aplastic Anemia, Sickle cell anemia, and genetic disorders such as Thalassemia.
How do you find a matching donor? Is there a test for it?
The selection of a donor is done through a special blood test, the HLA High-Resolution Typing that determines the similarity between the donor and the patient in terms of tissue. Typically sibling testing is done initially, however, when no match is obtained, parents or partial-match donors can also come into play.
What is the success rate, cost and risk of a bone marrow transplant?
The success rates are typically 60-90 percent in accordance with the condition and donor match, and the cost in India is usually 15,000-35,000 USD. There may be complications of infection, bleeding, and Graft-versus-Host Disease (in case of donor transplants), which can be well treated with appropriate medical treatment.
What are the evaluations needed before the bone marrow transplant?
The hospital first needs to test the compatibility of the donor and the recipient using the HLA typing. Apart from the HLA test, they also need to do some common tests like Blood tests, X-rays, PET Scans, biopsies, etc. This is necessary to determine the success rate off the surgery as it is dependent on the donor's and recipient's overall health.
Does insurance cover Bone Marrow Transplant in India?
Yes. Bone marrow transplants are covered under insurance but it is also dependent on your insurance provider.
What is time spent at the hospital for a bone marrow transplant?
The BMT process takes about 1-2 weeks. The transplant is performed 2 days after conditioning. The stem cells are passed slowly through the central line and may take 3-4 hours. So you need to spend about 2 weeks at the hospital.
What is the success rate of BMT in India?
There are various factors that decide the success rate of Bone Marrow Transplant in India. However, a rough estimate provides a success rate of approximately 60-80% in India.
What is the cost of bone marrow transplant in Delhi NCR?
Delhi NCR is one of the most accessible and well-connected cities in India making it one of the top choices for patients from all around the world. The bone marrow transplant cost in Delhi NCR is between INR 25-50 Lakhs, with 25-30+ fractions costing above 40 lakhs INR.
